The New Life Organization (NEWLO) is a skills training centre located in Grenada. NEWLO has, for 35 years, been dedicated to providing quality life and vocational skills training for disadvantaged youth, facilitating growth and development of the individual in relation to the family, the community and the nation. The trainees range in ages from 17 to 24 years. During the academic year, NEWLO trainees attend classes and training sessions at one of the two centers in either Palmiste, St. John’s or Mt. St. Ervan’s, St. Andrew’s (St. Andrew’s Life Centre – SALC)
The training programme at NEWLO commences with the Adolescent Development Programme (ADP). Most of the young people who come to NEWLO come from families marked by cyclical violence and a good number of them spend their time on the streets where they are exposed to drugs and all kinds of risk factors. The majority of the trainees are drop-outs from secondary schools.
The three months Adolescent Development Programme is aimed at developing basic skills such as literacy and numeracy, while at the same time, providing life skills courses geared toward increasing self-esteem, confidence and effecting attitudinal change through areas such as Counseling, Parenting, Self-awareness, Music, Drama, Crafts, Physical Education, Public Speaking, Health and Family Life, and Social Studies. Through our Spirituality programme using the SPICES approach (Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Creative, Emotional and Social), the Trainees are also guided to fully appreciate the right moral values that help them to develop a deeper relationship with God.
A Trainee who successfully completes the ADP is then invited to do one or two of the ten (10) employable skills offered at the Centre at Palmiste, St. John’s: (i) Furniture Making, (ii) Plumbing, (iii) Electrical Installation, (iv) General Construction, (v) Hospitality Arts, (vi) Cosmetology, (vii) Fashion Design, (viii) Air-condition & Refrigeration (ix) Allied Health – Geriatric Caregiver and (x) Computer Engineering. In addition to the ADP and the Skill areas, the Trainees are taught to appreciate the value of serving one’s community. Therefore, community service forms an integral part of the training programme.

ST. ANDREW’S LIFE CENTRE (SALC)

The St. Andrew’s Life Centre (SALC) was established in September 1992 at Munich, St. Andrew’s under the overall management of the then Executive Director, Mrs. Franka Alexis-Bernadine and Mr. Peter James as Coordinator/Instructor. The building in which the centre started was owned by the Catholic Church and was used as a community centre.

In 1993, the Centre was moved to the Lodged building opposite the Deluxe Cinema in Grenville under the new management of the Executive Director, Mrs. Ann David- Antoine and Mrs. Londa Bernard as Coordinator. In September 2004, the building was completely destroyed by Hurricane Ivan and when classes resumed in January 2005, it was at Mrs. Bernard’s house in Grenville.

Following Hurricane Ivan, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Rotary Club of Barbados, the Mustique Company, all provided the funding for the materials and the Catholic Church gave NEWLO a spot at the back of the Old Church in Grenville. With labour provided by the Trainees from Palmiste, a wooden building was constructed in September 2005.

Over the years, the Old Church building has continued to deteriorate to the point where a large portion of the back wall became dislodge from the building. It was therefore deemed unsafe for the Instructors and Trainees to continue training at the Centre. In June 2014, a building opposite the Old Church, owned by Mr. Eric Donald was rented to be used as the Centre. Unfortunately, in February 2015, Mr. Donald requested back his property for the end of March 2015. A request was made to Mr. Donald for an additional month extension – up to April 2015 and which was agreed upon.

As a result, discussion was held with the Bishop of Diocese of St. George’s, His Lordship Vincent Darius, who agreed to allow NEWLO to renovate an abandon concrete building with no roofing at Mt. St. Ervans, St. Andrew’s. Funding for the renovation and completion were received from the Republic Bank Grenada, local fundraising from the annual Family Day Luncheon, contributions from businesses, organizations and NEWLO’s own cash contribution.
