NEWLO IN GRENADA — empowering and transforming the lives of youths since 1984

By Gerry Hopkin, JD

After having graduated over 5000 students, of whom many can be found living productive lives throughout Grenada, the region and beyond, the New Life Organization (NEWLO), located in Palmiste, St. John, Grenada, is continuing to be a quality vocational and life-skills training facility for young men and women and folks of all ages, religions and creeds. The institution facilitates the growth and sustainable development of each student, with a view to elevating families, the community, nation, region and world.

This positively beneficial institution was founded in 1984 by leaders of the Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian Church Communities led by the deceased Bishop Emeritus, Sydney Charles. Initially NEWLO catered mainly for young men and women who were interested in getting technical or vocational training. Their age range was 17-24 and they mainly came from vulnerable homes and families. In recent years, however, NEWLO accepts adult males and females of all ages who desire to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Enrolled students include primary and secondary school dropouts, secondary school graduates, single mothers and other mature individuals.

The facility offers qualified staff and produces trainees with recognized international, regional or national certification. In fact, NEWLO graduates can be found today in every strata of society and across various industries, making a difference as productive parents and guardians, employees and business owners in Grenada and beyond.

The organization’s technical and vocational training includes Certificate Programmes in the following areas:
– Hospitality Arts
– Plumbing
– Electrical Installation
– General Construction/Maintenance
– General Cosmetology
– Computer Engineering
– Garment Fashion Design
– Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration
– Health Care
– Carpentry

NEWLO also offers an Adolescent Development Programme and an External Training Programme which allows students to take evening classes.

Special commendations must be given to all of the dedicated Chief Administrators and instructors who have served at NEWLO over the years. In particular, I must salute Sister Margaret Owusuah, who has been doing a wonderful job in steering the institution along a path of sustainable development.

To learn more about NEWLO or to make a DONATION to this wonderful institution which has been transforming the lives of many Grenadians and others from the region, one can give the administrators a call, send an email, surprise them with a check in the mail, or visit the facility on the west coast of Grenada.
