Refrigeration And Air-Conditioning – Level 1

The CVQ Level 1 in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning is for individuals whose role requires well developed behavioural competencies but whose scope for independent decision making and for bringing about change is limited. Each unit of study is accompanied by a “Hands on” completion project. Persons who attain this qualification will operate under supervision.
They are likely to be in roles where they are required to:

  • Use graduated measuring devices
  • Perform mechanical procedures (residential)
  • Perform electrical procedures (residential)
  • Draw and interpret sketches and simple drawings
  • Use power tools
  • Use hand tools

Normally persons working at Level 1 should be able to competently carry out simple and routine work activities and to collaborate with others. The qualification covers competencies by providing Refrigeration and Air-conditioning services at the basic level as indicated in the competency standard.

Relevant occupations include:

  • Maintenance and Repair Workers, General
  • Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers
  • Assistant mechanical Engineers
  • Assistant heating Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers
  • Home Appliance Repairers

To achieve this qualification all core units must be achieved along with a minimum of two (2) Level 1 and one (1) Level 2 electives.

Areas of training include the following:

  • Use power tools
  • Use hand tools
  • Perform related computations (basic)
  • Perform housekeeping duties
  • Draw and interpret sketches and simple drawings
  • Use graduated measuring devices
  • Perform manual handling and lifting
  • Use electrical/electronic measuring devices
  • Plan to undertake a routine task
  • Perform mechanical procedures (residential)
  • Perform electrical procedures (residential)
  • Perform control and protection procedures (residential)
  • Maintain system components (residential)
  • Maintain system components (residential)
  • Install air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation equipment and components (residential)
  • Perform brazing and/or silver soldering
  • Attached flexible cables and plugs to electrical machinery appliances and fixtures.

Length of Period of Training: Nine (6) months
